Freedom4 Joins it!

As per their company website http://www.freedom4.com/pg.asp?p=1068

FREEDOM4, (a joint venture between Pipex + Intel Capital and partner of Airspan Networks, Nokia Siemens Networks, Ericsson, and National Grid Wireless )

&

ConnectMK (formed by Milton Keynes Council )

have finally joined hands to deliver Wimax services in 3.6 GHz band as predicted below .

Mobile Wimax in 3.6GHz authorised

As suggested in my previous post, companies have consulted ofcom. ;o)

Ofcom came out with following statement as per their web source http://ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/bb_application/statement/

"We consider that the continuation of the restriction on mobile use in UK Broadband’s licence is not justified and our examination of responses suggests that there are no compelling reasons not to vary the licence as proposed in the June consultation document."

"Removing restrictions on the licensee will benefit consumers, encourage competition, optimise use of the spectrum and is therefore in the interests of citizens and consumers. Ofcom also believes that the likelihood of interference to other users is low."

Let's wait for the Mobile Wimax of our favorite players Pipex , Intel , Nortel , Freedom4 and Airspan .

The availability of 3.6 GHz can make this band a major choice in UK.

Wimax UK (Major Players)

PiPex

(Strength): Holding national spectrum enables Pipex Communications to target key markets without geographic constraint or spectrum boundary issues.

Recently:

Pipex Communications has set up a separate company called Pipex Wireless to pursue its wireless opportunities and has announced Intel Capital as its partner in their joint venture ( FREEDOM4).

Yesterday:

FREEDOM4 has yesterday joined BOZII according to their website and plans to increase their hotspots in UK & London.

Current Wi-Fi Hotspots: UK= 2454 & London = 399
This collaboration boasts of 30,000 hotspots in 88 countries globally.

Wifi / WiMax:

FREEDOM4 is targeting WiMAX services only in Manchester, Milton Keynes and Warwick while simultaneously concentrating on Wi-Fi more than wimax as discussed above.

Graham Currier, Business Development Director at FREEDOM4 comments, “We view Wi-Fi as a complimentary technology to WiMAX and partnering with BOZII means we can significantly increase our wireless services footprint.”

FREEDOM4 has collaborated with Airspan Networks, Nokia Siemens Networks, Ericsson, and National Grid Wireless to provide WiMAX services to nomadic workers, businesses and SoHos.

Reason behind their preference of Wi-Fi over WiMax:

There is a fierce competition between 3G & WiMax Companies for buying the license that is being auctioned by ofcom next year.

Moreover, even If they today deploy fixed wimax services in their licensed band, they will not be able to upgrade to mobile wimax in absence of another license or they will have to consult ofcom.
